WoundED

Treat realistic wounds in virtual reality!

WoundED is virtual reality game teaches wound care, and it was developed for healthcare students. Playing the game requires proficiency in wound care, where the player is familiar with different wound types, treatment methods, and wound care products.

The game is a single-player experience, but multiple students can participate by sharing the player's screen. It is recommended that students are guided in using the game before playing, and afterwards, the gaming experience is reviewed together with the teacher.

Gameplay

In WoundEd, the player initially selects a patient to treat, and is provided with background information about the patient and the wound.

WoundED consists of three levels, where various patients are treated over three treatment sessions. Wound care follows the same wound care principles as in real life (examining the wound, assessing temperature and pulses in the leg, measuring wound size, evaluating pain and the need for bacterial culture sample, numbing the wound if necessary, cleaning and disinfecting the wound, and applying the appropriate wound care products).

Wound care results in a visual response, where the appearance of the wound changes based on the actions taken between treatment sessions. At the end of the game, the player receives a summary of their actions.

Game Design

The game was designed from the start for Oculus Quest devices, so the graphics and other game play  elements were designed so that the experience is functional and immersive for virtual reality.

Most challenging phase of the development process was digitizing all the wounds and treatments so that the wound would react dynamically to all the players actions and selections.

Virtual reality functionalities were created using the Clever SE VR platform, so that most of the development processes was concentrated on generating the logic for a dynamic wound and optimizing the usability of the VR environment. The testing for the game was mainly performed by the end users.

Teaching Content

WoundEd was created in collaboration with nursing experts and Clever Simulation Entertainment. The game's content was also consulted by a wound care nurse during the development phase. While playing the game, it is important to note that it does not fully replicate the realistic situation in nursing practice.

Wound healing process in real life is influenced by many factors, and the progression is not as straight forward as in the game. Functionalities for the game needed to be simplified and there are right or wrong choices. The game encourages players to contemplate different treatment options, make decisions for the progression of the healing and the well-being of the patient.

It's not just about treating the wound, but also about caring for the person!

Future Development

WoundED is currently available only in Finnish and only available for Meta virtual reality devices, but based on very positive feedback more language options and device support for desktop PC and other control systems are under consideration.
